ACMA reprimands telcos for permitting SMS scams.

Preston 12 May,2023(TIE)The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has found that Sinch, Infobip, and Phone Card breached anti-spam obligations, allowing more than 100,000 scam SMS messages to be sent impersonating road toll companies, Medicare, and Australia Post.

The investigation revealed that Sinch allowed 14,291 messages impersonating Medicare and Australia Post, Infobip allowed 103,146 non-compliant SMSs to be sent including scams impersonating road toll companies, while Phone Card was found to have inadequate systems in place. ACMA Chair Nerida O’Loughlin said that these telcos allowed scammers to prey on Australians due to their failures to have adequate processes in place and comply with the rules.
