Preston 23 June2022(TIE)Today, significant amendments were presented to the Victorian Parliament in order to support the work of the Victoria Police and keep the community of Victoria safe.

Changes are made by the Justice Legislation Amendment (Police and Other Matters) Bill 2022 to assist police in carrying out their daily tasks successfully and continuing to provide the services that the community expects.

According to the law, police will have expanded authority to safeguard the safety of police facilities, including police stations, and will be able to eject anyone who isn’t welcome or poses a security risk.

Currently, police can only reach agreements with commercial operators for additional police services inside of events; they are unable to recoup costs for services provided outside of venues, such as monitoring traffic and crowd behaviour.

Additionally, the law:allows the Chief Commissioner to take more than one disciplinary action in response to a police officer or PSO who has a criminal charge proven against them and makes it clear that Protective Services Officers can use specialist police terrorism powers when operating in an authorised area in the event of a terrorism incident
