Preston May15,2023(TIE)To update the obsolete myki system for the state’s train, tram and bus networks, Victoria will hire an American public transport ticketing expert.

The Andrews administration has opted not to renew the $100 million per year contract now held by operator NTT Data and would instead replace it with a $1.7 billion deal with Conduent.

The ticketing system will switch from being based on myki cards to being based on accounts. Travellers will be able to pay for rides on the state’s public transportation system using their credit card, phone, or smart device.

Myki cards will continue to work for the following two years.

On Monday afternoon, Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll announced the successful bidder in the government’s protracted procurement procedure. The two parties then signed a 15-year agreement that will take effect on December 1.

He stated that the new system’s trials would start the following year and that its functions would be gradually added over the following year or two.
