According to Mumbai Police, a crew member of the film ‘The Kerala Story’ received a threatening message from an unknown number. Sudipto Sen, the director of the movie, reported the incident to the police. The message warned the individual not to leave their house alone and criticized the film’s portrayal of the story. Police provided security to the crew member, but no FIR has been filed as no written complaint has been received yet. The Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal banned the film on May 8, citing “maintenance of peace” and to avoid incidents of “hatred and violence” in the state.

This has resulted in a political outcry, despite the movie being made tax-free in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh. The film, produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and directed by Sudipto Sen, narrates the story of three women trafficked to ISIS camps after being converted to Islam through marriage.
