Melbourne OCT14 (TIE)Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit detectives found a loaded firearm in a car this morning following a single vehicle crash in Point Cook.

Detectives were patrolling the area when they noticed the car driving erratically and at speed through Point Cook on Thursday 14 October just after midnight.

A check of the car registrations plates, which were different, identified the car was an outstanding stolen vehicle.

As police worked to coordinate other units to the area, they saw the vehicle travel through a red light at Duncans Road and continue onto the Princes Freeway towards the city.

When police caught up to the Hyundai i30 it had crashed into the freeway wire rope barrier.

Officers rendered assistance to the man and woman and assisted them from the vehicle.

A search of the car uncovered a loaded handgun and alleged traffickable quantity of methylamphetamine.

It is also believed the vehicle was stolen during an aggravated burglary in Albion in July.

The male driver, a 29-year-old from Sunshine West, has been taken to hospital under police guard.

His 29-year-old female passenger from Altona Meadows, also required medical assistance and was taken to hospital for treatment.

It is expected the man will be interviewed at a later date in relation to theft of a motor vehicle, drug trafficking and firearm offences.
