Preston June 8,2022(TIE)Premier Daniel Andrews has shot down claims that his refusal to adopt a pro-mask campaign is motivated by the forthcoming election in November.
On Wednesday, the Premier reiterated that he had received no medical advice to reinstate the mask rule in further contexts.
Despite Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton’s social media statement earlier this week emphasising the significance of wearing masks indoors,
Professor Sutton was contacted by the Herald Sun last week for an official response through the Department of Health.
“Wearing a mask remains recommended if you can’t physically distance yourself, are in indoor common spaces, or are among persons who may be vulnerable to Covid-19 or medically at risk,” a Department representative said Tuesday night.
Mr Andrews denied on Wednesday that his hesitation to re-implement.
He stated, “The assumption and cheap criticism that this has something to do with politics — no, that’s not how I work.”
“Secondly, I’m not aware of any recommendations for us to follow.” If we do receive advice, the Minister will have to consider it.
“We have to acknowledge that this isn’t the first month.”
In the last 24 hours, 25 more Victorians have died as a result of the infection.
“There will be a number of those people,” Mr Andrews said. “I’m not discounting the horror of those people’s deaths in any way… but there are some people who die of that virus and other people who die with that virus.”
“And that’s why we don’t have politicians presiding over these issues.” The coroner’s office and other procedures will be involved.
“However, there is clear guidance out there that wearing a mask has clear benefits for you… for the people you love, if that’s the choice you make.”
“In the end, the Victorian community did what we asked them to do, which was to be vaccinated.”
This is owing to the fact that it is an election year.
