Peston 21June,2022(AE)On Tuesday, the Greens will submit a bill in parliament that would ban all new gas connections to households by 2025.
The bill also aims to prevent Victoria’s planning laws from requiring new residences to be gas-connected.

Current state planning regulations mandate that all new homes be connected to natural gas where it is accessible.Even in new house developments where electric energy sources could be used, gas is still required.

Samantha Ratnam, the party’s leader, will introduce the Planning and Environment Amendment (Transition From Gas) Bill 2022 in the upper chamber.

Dr Tim Read, interim climate spokesperson for the Victorian Greens, noted that using gas is a huge contributor to the global catastrophe and is also incredibly costly.

“It’s absurd that Victorian regulations require new homes to be connected to gas when we all know how expensive, polluting, and unhealthy it is,” he added.

“While cities and countries throughout the world are going gas-free, Victoria is lagging behind, requiring residences to be gas-connected.
