Preston 20 June 2022(TIE)Senator Greg Mirabella of the Liberal Party has lost the contest for the final Victorian seat.
The Australian Electoral Commission announced on Monday that Ralph Babet of the United Australia Party had been elected to the sixth position.

The two contenders were up against one other in a close race. Mr Babet was about 2300 votes ahead on personal first-preference.

Following the re-election of Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson and Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie, the Coalition was unable to keep its third seat.

After the tragic death of Kimberley Kitching, former Australian Services Union assistant national secretary Linda White was elected for Labor alongside Jana Stewart, who will become the party’s first Victorian Aboriginal senator.

Senator Mirabella was only appointed in late November to succeed departing former Senate President Scott Ryan.

Senator Mirabella said it was an honour to serve in the upper house, despite his brief tenure.

He called the loss of the Coalition’s third senate seat in Victoria “unfortunate,” and said the federal election result raised “many questions” for the Liberal Party.

Senator Mirabella stated, “As an organisation, we must honestly and openly consider how we can communicate our ideals to a large nationwide constituency.”

“I’m excited to be a part of moving these debates forwards.”

More than 4420 Victorians voted for Mr Babet below the line. Senator Mirabella received only 2127 votes in comparison.

Mr. Rabet refers to himself as a “proud father.”
